We are always looking for great volunteer tutors to assist an adult to improve their reading, writing, math & use of English. Help a learner achieve their goal(s) of:

Volunteer Tutor Job Description
Qualifications and Assets:
- Dependable, patient and creative
- Interested in others
- Encourage and support your learner by creating a positive learning environment
- Appreciation for lifelong learning
- Good sense of humour
- Familiarity with local library and other sources of information
- Possess a library card
- Computer knowledge
- Ability to work independently with learner
Responsibilities:
- Attend 2 hour Orientation and 6 hour Tutor Workshop & receive a Haldimand-Norfolk Literacy Council certificate
- Attend on-going upgrading and/or special interest workshops
- Commit to a minimum of one year
- Meet with your learner at least once a week for a minimum of 1 hour. Two sessions would be ideal. Each tutor/learner match is unique. The needs of the learner and the availability of the tutor and learner determine the number of sessions per week
- Prepare weekly lessons
- Select resources to help learner achieve his/her goal(s)
- Complete the Tutor Hours and Progress Sheet and submit on the last day of each month
- Call the Coordinator if you have any concerns or questions (ie. if you and/or your learner are not meeting regularly, attendance is a problem, unsuitable resources, lack of progress, etc.)
How do I get started?
- Call the Coordinator to set up an appointment and discuss the following requirements
- Complete an application
- Complete a reading, writing and math assessment
- Provide 3 references (suggestions: workplace, volunteer agency or educational)
- Provide a Police Record Check
