EventsSweet Heart Dinner & AuctionFebruary 11, 2010Haldimand-Norfolk Literacy Council hosts their annual fundraiser Sweet Heart Dinner & Auction on Thursday, February 11, 2010 at the beautiful Greens at Renton. Tickets are $75 each and include dinner, auction and entertainment. A $50 charitable receipt will be issued for each ticket purchased. Funds will be raised through ticket sales, silent auction and sponsors. Scotiabank is a lead sponsor. A few featured items will be auctioned live including a garden shed, courtesy of Harthill Contracting, an exciting Toronto Mortorsports race package and a Hamilton Limo Casino Niagara trip. The dinner and auction fundraiser will support adult literacy programs and employment and life skills for adults in the community. In addition to raising funds for literacy, this year’s guests will be treated to a truly funny, entertaining and educational evening featuring special guests Rick Green and William J. Thomas. Rick Green, a Gemini Award winning director, comedian, TV writer, author, producer, educator, magician & adult with ADHD will act as the evening’s emcee. His latest film ADD & Loving It?!, features comedian/actor Patrick McKenna, and recently aired on Global TV. Rick is also well-known for his involvement in television’s History Bites, Prisoners of Gravity and The Red Green Show. As an adult with ADHD, Mr. Green brings his unique perspective on learning and an opportunity to see things differently. William J. Thomas is the author of eight books of humour, including bestseller “The Dog Rules (Damn Near Everything).” He’s also a scriptwriter, radio and television commentator and nationally syndicated newspaper columnist. His weekly column Land of the Loony, appears in 45 Canadian and American newspapers. Guests are sure to be delighted with his uncanny, funny presentation. The evening brings together laughter and learning to provide inspiration and support for the many adults in our community who struggle with writing, reading and numeracy skills. “In Love With Learning” Read-a-ThonSeptember 8th through to October 24thSupport literacy and lifelong learning by joining us as a reader or a sponsor. Your support will directly help adults in Haldimand-Norfolk upgrade their skills to find employment. The Read-a-Thon will finish with a six hour “In Love With Learning” Read-In on October 24th, 2009 from 10:00 - 4:00. Read-In's will happen at both the Simcoe Town Centre and the Dunnville Adult Learning Centre (227 Queen Street). HNLC tutor training workshopApril 23, 2009The Haldimand Norfolk Literacy Council is pleased to offer a Tutor Training Certificate Workshop using the Laubach methodology. Space is limited so call early. This training will be of interest to those wishing to volunteer for the Literacy Council, teachers, parents and any individual assisting another to learn. Participants will learn to teach to learning styles and assist learners to overcome learning challenges and more. There will be a free orientation in Dunnville & Simcoe to the Haldimand Norfolk Literacy Council and what we do on Thursday April 23rd from 7pm-9pm. Orientation in Dunnville at the learning centre (Optimist Hall-Main St) and in Simcoe at 47 Robinson St. The workshop will be held Saturday May 9th 2009 from 9:00-3:30 at the St Leonard’s Society in Dunnville (208 Broad St). It has become an opportunity for individuals, organizations, and countries throughout the world to renew their efforts to promote literacy and demonstrate their commitment to providing education to all. If you, or someone you know would like help with reading, writing, spelling, math or basic computer skills give us a call and we will put you in touch with someone who can help.
